What is naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care that has roots back to ancient Greece and Hippocrates, who taught, “Nature is the healer of all diseases.” Naturopathic medicine is an art, science, philosophy and practice of diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease. Naturopathic physicians merge the knowledge and wisdom of homeopaths, herbalists, chiropractors, counselors, and nutritionists. Naturopathic medicine attempts to find the underlying cause of the patient’s condition rather than focusing on symptomatic treatment. Naturopathic physicians are both primary care providers and family physicians.
What is naturopathic medical philosophy?
The philosophy of naturopathic medicine is based on the following six principles:
• the healing power of nature
• identify and treat the cause
• first do no harm
• doctor as teacher
• treat the whole person
• prevention is the best cure

What type of training does a naturopathic doctor receive?
Licensed naturopathic physicians have completed a rigorous four-year graduate program at one of five accredited naturopathic medical schools in North America. ND’s are trained in medical sciences including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, cardiology, neurology, radiology, minor surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, psychology, dermatology, and clinical and physical diagnosis.
Dr. Chapman has also completed advance studies in intravenous therapy, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine, and spinal manipulation. In the state of Oregon, the law requires that each naturopathic physician complete extensive postdoctoral board examinations to obtain licensure.
What is naturopathic physical medicine?
Naturopathic physical medicine involves the evaluation, diagnosis and non-operative treatment of painful musculoskeletal diseases. Diagnostic modalities include a comprehensive history, a detailed and specific physical examination, radiological evaluations and local anesthetic blocks.
Dr. Patrick Chapman is trained in techniques of massage, manipulation, and physical therapeutics, which are used to treat injury and pain. This involves the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions such as:
• Motor vehicle accidents
• Sports injuries
• Chronic pain
Therapeutic modalities include manipulation, massage, soft tissue techniques, ultrasound, trigger point injections, stretching, and therapeutic exercise. Pharmaceutical, nutritional, herbal, and homeopathic treatments are tailored to individual needs.

What is homeopathy?
Homeopathic medicines cure diseases by virtue of their similarity of symptoms; that is, medicines cure, or remove in the sick, symptoms similar to those which they have the power of producing in the healthy. For example, if you were to ingest certain poisons you may be advised to drink syrup of ipecac to induce vomiting. ipecac is derived from the root of a South American plant called ipecacuanha. When healthy volunteers take ipecac they experience not only vomiting but also incessant nausea, increased salivation, and coughing until they gag or vomit.
Ipecacuanha, administered in minute doses, is therefore a useful medicine to allay the incessant nausea of a woman with morning sickness or a child with a gagging cough. Homeopathy is highly effective. In acute and chronic disease, whether the symptoms are physical, mental, or emotional homeopathy produces subtle yet often dramatic healing.

What type of conditions does Dr. Chapman treat?
